Addressing Chronic Pain through Patient- and Clinician-facing CDS
This 1-hour webinar will introduce viewers to two new efforts to develop and implement patient-facing and clinician-facing shareable clinical decision support (CDS) to improve chronic pain care, newly funded by the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ). The complementary efforts highlight the ambitious technical and design goals to make shareable CDS actionable and effective for patients and providers alike.

One effort (led by Project Director, Dr. Barry Blumenfeld at RTI International) includes a multi-organizational team that is developing shareable CDS to promote shared decision-making in primary care clinics—including data from state-level prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMP), patient-reported outcomes, and the capability to document in local electronic health records.

The second effort (led by Project Director, Dr. Kristen Miller at MedStar Health) is investigating human-centered design approaches to developing and implementing shareable patient- and clinician-facing CDS specifically enhancing the quality of clinical discussion and patient engagement to optimize chronic pain management therapy.

These efforts represent the next stages in efforts that AHRQ has been leading through its support of the Learning Network and CDS Connect, please see AHRQ’s CDS website for more information on these and other initiatives.
